Situation:
Mdm Quek boards the bus and sees Uncle Chong seating alone. The only available seat on the bus is the one next to Uncle Chong. Mdm Quek decides to stand instead, something that she rarely does. Both Mdm Quek and Uncle Chong alight on the same stop at Bukit Timah. Uncle Chong walks in front of Mdm Quek. Mdm Quek is in a hurry, so she decides to overtake Uncle Chong. Just then, Uncle Chong spits to his side and his spit lands on Mdm Quek’s high heels. Furious, Mdm Quek stops Uncle Chong by firmly standing in front of him with her hands on her waist. She hurls abuses ranging from simple crude words in English to profound vulgarities in Hokkien at Uncle Chong. Uncle Chong tries to convince her that he did not do it on purpose. Refusing to give in, Mdm Quek continues the abuse. Uncle Chong becomes agitated and raises his volume and both of them get themselves in a quarrel. Their conflict arouses the attention of people around them. Mdm Quek, feeling embarrassed, warns Uncle Chong in a loud and fierce tone and stomps away angrily, not wanting to bring any more embarrassment to herself. Uncle Chong mutters to himself “crazy woman” and continues minding his own business.

  1. Wa? Where are my mannerisms? Where do you move beyond surface observations to evaluate these people’s behaviours?
